| Caption | BIRTHPLACE OF GENERAL MAXCY GREGG Maxcy Gregg, Confederate General and leader in Southern Rights Movement, was born Aug. 1, 1815 in a house on this site. Member of committee which framed the ordinance of secession, Dec. 1860; Colonel 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers; Brigadier General in 1861. Mortally wounded at Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862; died two days later. Erected 1938 by The Columbia Sesquicentennial Commission of 1936. |
