Marker text: JEFFERSON COUNTY

Formed, 1801, from Berkeley. Named for Thomas Jefferson. Home of Gens. Gates, Darke and Charles Lee. Here four companies of Washington's men organized. Shepherdstown was strongly urged as the seat of the National Capitol.
