Marker text: JEFFERSON COUNTY

Formed in 1801 from Berkely. Named for Thomas Jefferson. Home of Generals Gates, Darke, and Charles Lee. Here four companies of Washington's men organized. Shepherdstown was strongly urged as the seat of the National Capitol.
