Marker text: ROANOKE PLANTATION

Nine miles west is Roanoke, home of John Randolph, a member of the House of Representatives for many years, and Senator. Randolph at first was Jefferson's lieutenant and later on an opponent and critic, but he never lost the love of his constituents. He died in Philadelphia, May 24, 1833, and was buried here; later his remains were moved to Richmond.
